This is Proteus1. Proteus is a diving/climbing bot that glides through the water like an airplane. It can be configured to sit on the bottom and climb or float on the surface and dive. The tail and both wings are adjustable to allow for different rates of dive/climb, or to do banks to the left or right. This bot can even do flips and rolls. It is far to powerful to test in my aquarium, as I think it will travel at least 15-20 feet on a shallow dive. This little guy would just be to much fun in a large swimming pool. One of the design traits of Proteus and all of my Aquabots is a distribution of weight and buoyancy that forces the bots to always right themselves solar cell side up. Even if placed in the water upside down the bot will immediately flip over. This is very important, as a bot that comes to the surface upside down is dead in the water. Proteus2 will have autonomous steering and a mechanical swim bladder.

This little weight is the key to making Proteus1 operate in two modes. With the weight in place, the bot is slightly negatively buoyant and sinks to the bottom. With the weight removed, it is slightly positively buoyant and floats. Loads of hot summer fun in the sun.
